{ 04 } — What makes it hard
Playback is the visible tenth of an OTT platform.
Video that plays is table stakes. The economics and the failures both live in the parts the viewer never sees.
Delivery cost scales with success
Every additional viewer costs bandwidth, and a badly configured ladder ships 4K to a phone on a metered connection. Encoding profiles and adaptive rules are a margin decision as much as a quality one.
The catalogue is a rights database
Availability is a function of territory, window, device, and contract, changing on dates nobody controls. Titles have to appear and disappear reliably, and a missed expiry is a contractual breach rather than a bug.
Churn is decided in the first session
Startup time, seek responsiveness, and whether the recommendation surfaced something worth watching determine whether a subscriber returns. These are engineering properties measured in milliseconds, not marketing outcomes.
Piracy responds to friction, not to DRM alone
Watermarking, concurrency limits, and credential-sharing controls each trade convenience against leakage, and the right point on that curve is a business decision that engineering has to implement precisely.
{ 05 } — What you have to get right
Licensing, classification, and viewer data all have rules.
Rights enforcement is the load-bearing compliance function. Territory, window, device class, and concurrent-stream limits derive from licensing agreements, and they must be evaluated at the moment playback is authorised rather than assumed from what the catalogue displayed — because a counterparty auditing availability checks the stream, not the listing.
Viewer data is unusually revealing. A complete viewing history is sensitive personal information under DPDP, and the retention question — how long you keep a granular record of what someone watched and when — is one to answer deliberately rather than by leaving the default in place.
